American Cockroach

Description:

I went into the garage, and I saw an American cockroach, resting on the garage floor. This cockroach, was about one and one fourth of an inch long, and about three fourths of an inch wide. This cockroach, had a large pair of compound eyes, and it's antennae, was almost as long as it's body length. It had filament antennae. It had a black head. It had two,large, black areas, on its thorax. It had six legs, and four wings. It's color, was a reddish-brown color. This cockroach was alive, and able to move. Order: Blattodea Family: Blattidae Genus: Periplaneta Species: americana They have a relatively small head, and a broad flattened body, and most species are reddish-brown to dark brown in color. They have large, compound eyes, two ocelli, and long, flexible antennae. The body is divided into a thorax of three segments, and a ten-segmented abdomen. The tegmina, or first pair of wings, are tough and protective, lying as a shield on top of the membranous hind wings, which are used in flight. The three pairs of legs are sturdy, with large coxae and five claws each. The front legs are the shortest, and the hind legs are the longest. The abdomen has ten segments, each with a pair of spiracles for respiration. Cockroachs, are mainly nocturnal, and run away, when exposed to light. The American cockroach, feeds on: bread, fruit, leather, starch in book bindings, paper, glue, skin flakes, hair, dead insects and soiled clothing. The American cockroach, is also known as the palmetto bug, is one of the largest cockroach species in the U.S. The American cockroach, has three life stages: the egg, a variable number of nymphal instars, and the adult.

Habitat:

Cockroaches, occupy a wide range of habitats. Many live in leaf litter, among the stems of matted vegetation, in rotting wood, in holes in stumps, in cavities under bark, under log piles and among debris. Others live in arid regions. Others are aquatic, living near the surface of water bodies.
