Southern Black Racer Snake

Coluber constrictor priapus

Description:

We found this poor guy dead beside a pond at a campsite off of the Roanoke River, near downtown Halifax

Habitat:

He was laying outstretched in some leaves, just off of the trail

Notes:

It was warm the day before the snake was spotted (mid sixties), but got down to the twenties that night. I suspect the snake froze to death, thinking it had warmed up for good
