black-tailed jackrabbit

Lepus californicus

Habitat:

Grasslands and agricultural lands in the Central Valley.

Notes:

I have walked through weedy grasslands in the San Francisco Bay region and been very startled when a jackrabbit rockets out from under my feet. Sometimes they wait until you are right on them before they flush.
