millipedes

Description:

We are not sure what these are. We thought they were caterpillars. They clustered on the tree trunks and branches, preferring moisture. We were walking on a warm morning and we saw them only on the first section of the trail.

Habitat:

Nature trail near Lake Marion and cypress swamp

Here's another millipede aggregation of a different species. It looks like it happens every once in a while! Lucky you! :)

Hi Tammy, I found this link in Bug Guide about millipedes massing together. It is probably also a group of young millipedes that are about to leave the home site. http://bugguide.net/node/view/289771

Maybe Lauren would have a better one, but here's one. I had to look that up when lauren said Millipedes. I have never seen them that large. It looks like Luaren is correct.

Millipedes? Lauren, I would love a link. We walk every week and this week we saw no sign of them! We were surprised!

These are definitely millipedes - I can see two sets of legs per segment. I've never seen so many together before! Neat Find Tammy.
