These photos depict the birth through the thorax of the adult Cicada from the nymphoid larva (first pic)after having emerged from the groundThis process can take place over several hours,in the cover of darkness.This is in fact the second birth.The first being, when the eggs, layed in crevices plants or trees hatch and the larva burrow underground and remain there maybe several years. Cicadas feed on sap from plants and trees.
