Spitting Spider with Prey
Scytodes sp.
16.7354, -92.6387
Field Notes
Description:
This small spider of 5 mm had captured what looks like a small moth and enveloped it in silk. It was carrying it somewhere safer to feed on it.
Family Scytodidae.
Habitat:
Came to hunt at an ultraviolet light in the garden, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.
Notes:
These spiders get their prey from 10 to 20 mm away by "spitting" a liquid that when exposed to oxygen becomes sticky and toxic. They then bite their immobilized prey and wrap it up in silk from the spinnerets.
