Robber fly

Asilidae

Description:

A fly that is bristly with short thick legs and three eyes.

Habitat:

These flies live in areas such as: semi desert , shrubland, forest, and open dry areas

Notes:

These flies often ambush their prey in mid-flight. Assassin flies lie in wait for their prey to fly by and then attack. It looks as though this guy is in the middle of ingesting its' prey. We often see these flies on our playground. Of course we do live in a very hot and dry state!
