Yellow-crowned Night Heron

Nyctanassa violacea

Description:

Large heron with grayish-slate colored body. Black head with yellowish-white patch below the eyes. Large red eyes. Night herons have larger eyes compared to other herons, because they are mostly nocturnal. Yellow forehead with yellow feather plume extending from the yellow patch at back of the head. Yellowish orange bulky legs. Thick black sharp-pointed bill.

Habitat:

Tidal and Freshwater Wetlands throughout the east coast.

Notes:

Setting: day time; sitting in mangrove brush; J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge - Wildlife Drive - Sanibel Island.
