Brugmansia suaveolens
Good point and nice info. I just wanted to point out that even poisonous plants can be medicinal and make people aware the such plant is not totally poisonous that you can get some benefits from it. This is what you call education to increase our knowledge. If the only label a plant has is poisonous, then people might want to wipe it out in the same manner with the snakes. People kill it out of ignorance because snakes are labelled poisonous isn't it? I just want to share the little knowledge that I think would be beneficial to all.
Just wanted to chime back in since my comment started all this LOL. Jolly you are right that many medicines are derived from natural chemicals found in plant and animal's poisons and venom. And chemicals found in this plant have medical uses. But wouldn't you call a pit viper venomous just because it can be used to make medicine? Like I would warn or caution people against picking up a viper, I just wanted to caution people against ingesting any part of this plant for the reason dandoucette mentioned bellow. Besides every resource I've looked this plant up, includes a high toxicity warning.
See this article in the section titled: A dangerous high

By the way, this spotter might already be confused with the comments and nobody filled up the ID suggestion box. Can you do it Dan?
Thanks, I didn't know about this, it's an interesting article, it also states 'Under normal circumstances, accidentally consuming too much water is exceptionally rare.' Where as accidentally ingesting fatal amount of Datura or Brugmansia is much more common, especially those looking to get intoxicated.
Its fair enough to give the warning. You might want to read this about water intoxication: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_intox...
Sure anything in excess can be poisonous but comparing Brugmansia to water is a bit much. There have been many deaths from ingesting Datura but I've never heard of someone dying from drinking water. For labelling this as poisonous is more than fair, people should be warned how toxic this can be. I have a great book about Brugmansia and Datura which on the opening pages warns that ' All parts of Datura and Brugmansia plants contain dangerous levels of poison and may be fatal to humans and livestock. Some municipalities even prohibit the purchase, sale and cultivation of either or both Brugmansia and Datura'
That is correct. But remember that anything in excess can be poisonous. Even water can lead to intoxication. The venom of the south american pit viper Bothrops jararaca is also poisonous but from it comes an ace inhibitor to lower hypertension. So in short, it can be poisonous at the same time medicinal. We cannot give it a single label as "POISONOUS".
That is true Jolly, but Hyoscyamine is only one alkaloid in the plant, there are many more, which combined can be fatal.
I'm going to have to agree with Livan, all Datura and Brugmansia species are extremely toxic and can be fatal in large doses.
Not really poisonous. Its the main ingredient for an antispasmodic medicine called BUSCOPAN.
Agree with Brugmansia suaveolens (Angel Trumpet), it may well be one of many cultivated varieties. Also note all parts of plant are extremely poisonous if ingested.

This isn't Datura, it is most likely Brugmansia suaveolens, Angel's Trumpet.
I think this is a close relative of Datura called Brugmansia. Brugmansia has pendulous flowers rather than the erect ones on Datura. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datura
