Bull Snake

Pituophis catenifer

Description:

About 24 inches long, tan background with dark brown blotches

Habitat:

Open field with grass about 18 inches high, some yucca & cacti in upland, cattails, currant & willow shrubs along ephemeral creek and pond of about 3 acres. Snake was grabbed at edge of the pond

Notes:

This one is very feisty! Hissing with open mouth, flattened head; striking repeatedly at its captor and the photographer. But me once, in sort of an exploratory manner -not hard & didn't break the skin.
