Thanks MilesBerkley! The soil wasn't that sandy and it was on top of the overturned log. It had very undulate leaves unlike Polytrichum commune. I could see the rows of lamellae on these guys so I don't think it's P. commune. I love the Polytrichacae they always look like little pine trees to me.

I believe what you have here is Polytrichum commune.
