Large gray wolf type spider. Leg span 3 inches or more (see the photo with the battery for scale, although the battery is closer to the camera than the spider). The abdomen seems unusually small for a spider of this size.
When my kids flooded the flower bed by the patio this big spider crawled out from under somewhere and went up the house wall.
