American black bear

Ursus americanus

Description:

This was the first time I had ever seen a bear in the wild! This mother was with her cub. Just an unforgettable experience. To my surprise this "Black" bear was blonde not black. I later learned that about 91% of the bears in this area are blond.

Habitat:

Pine forest at Sequoia National Park

Notes:

Not a good idea to go near a black bear with her cub.
