Scarlet Leatherflower

Clematis texensis

A vine with red flowers, the thick leathery four parts that open like a bell are the modified sepals. Leaves may look like a glove or be oval, and are often in sets of three.

Growing through bushes alongside a creek.

One of my favorite wildflowers in this area. There is also a a Purple Leatherflower (Clematis pitcheri ) which I see less frequently.
