Fig

Ficus carica

Description:

Figs are the fruit of the oldest known cultivated fruit tree. The tree has large lobed leaves which are shed in winter and when it has lost them, it shows its gnarled branches. The whole plant gives off white latex if cut, which is an irritant. The green, yellow or dark purple fruit contains hundreds of tiny drupelets embedded in a sticky substance and enclosed by a fleshy skin. The fruit is soft, sweet and has a honey-like flavor when fully ripe.

Notes:

Maltese name: Tina
