British Soldier Lichen

Cladonia cristatella

Description:

The structure of the British soldier lichen can be called a podetium, where the entire structure is a fruticose lichen, because of the upright branches. The red structure at the top is an apothecium, an open ascocarp (fruiting body) that bears the ascospores in asci.

Gorgeous specimen Jared, I invite you to add this and any other lichens you may have from the region to my mission, http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/3823...

Me too Mark! It was also solitary. Its amazing how something like this can appear to grow on a rock.

Nice example Jared. The ones I've found only have maybe one or two red tips. That's a classic.
