hippopotamus

Hippopotamus amphibius

Description:

Immense; nearly naked skin. Typically occurs in groups.

Habitat:

Riverine. This individual was part of a group of about 30 hippos in an estuary.

Notes:

The group was fairly inactive. Young hippos tended to be in the center of the group, probably to provide protection from large crocodiles that also occur here.
