Painted turtle

Chrysemis picta

Habitat:

On a busy six-lane suburban road, running against 45 mph traffic. I narrowly missed hitting her, pulled over to pick her up, then pulled onto a side street adjoining Ellicott Creek to release her on the bank of the creek.

Notes:

This is probably a female, going by the short stumpy claws.
