Beard lichen

Usnea filipendula

Description:

This plant can be used as an emergency supply as a compliment or substitute for food. Beard Lichens (in Sweden) are high in carbohydrates. One way to prepare lichen is to let it soak in water for 2-48 hours and then boil it for 40 minutes in fresh water. It has a bitter taste and a very slimy texture.

Habitat:

Found it on a dead spruce close to a river with brackish water.

Notes:

Beard Lichens is considered as one of the 14 most important wild plants in a survival situation in Sweden.

This is so cool, I read some articles and saw some video about extreme survival. I love this subject. There is no place where you can get lost in Brazil, dear Miss, not in the midst of nature, not that I know. My option is to sleep a day in my wardrobe, to know how it would spend a night inside the hollow trunk a tree. :P

Yes Sckel but only in the Swedish nature. If I would be placed in the middle of nowhere in Brasil, I would probably starve or eat some poisonous fruits :P
