Hi, Musicwolf. You're definitely in the right ball park. Most likely candidate is Chinese privet, Ligustrum sinense. There are a couple other privets that can be found in North America (Ligustrum japonicum, Ligustrum ovalifolium), but I think they bloom a little later. By the way, Chinese privet is invasive in the Southeast ... masses of it everywhere.
