Horsetails are unique because they reproduce by spores, not seeds. Little flowers of the blue-eyed grass (Sisyrinchium) are growing in close proximity and are pictured peeking through the horsetail.
Grassy meadow.
They're sometimes referred to as "living fossils" because they're members of the only genus in the class Equisetopsida.
