Horsetail

Equisetum sp.

Description:

Horsetails are unique because they reproduce by spores, not seeds. Little flowers of the blue-eyed grass (Sisyrinchium) are growing in close proximity and are pictured peeking through the horsetail.

Habitat:

Grassy meadow.

Notes:

They're sometimes referred to as "living fossils" because they're members of the only genus in the class Equisetopsida.
