Millipede

Description:

This millipede was brownish-black in body. It was about 6 inches long. The body was divided into about 40 segments to allow for flexibility, kind of like the segments on an airport baggage train. There were too many legs to count, but I estimate the number in the 100-200 range. The legs were scarlet in color. From Wikipedia, I found out that they secrete a liquid that causes burns on the skin.

Habitat:

I found this bug on the side of a picnic table in the forests of Waller Mill Park, VA. It was in a sandy location about 150 meters from the nearest road. The forest it inhabits is temperate and semihumid, with many varieties of plants and animals.
