Keystone mutualists are organisms that participate in mutually beneficial interactions, the loss of which would have a profound impact upon the ecosystem as a whole. The excavations of this squirrel are important for species throughout California, including burrowing owl, San Joaquin kit fox, California tiger salamander, and a wide variety of other small vertebrates and invertebrates.
