Thanks Mark. Been wondering about this for some time. Mount Kinabalu (where this was spotted) has a high number of endemic species but based on the widespread distribution and resemblance, I'd say you're correct about the ID.

This looks like one of the many Malayan rat species. Do the Wiki search for malayan mammals and goggle each of the species until you find the right one. I'm sure it is there.
