I've looked at the references and photos and it does sure look like Large Beardtongue. There were a number of them blooming. I'm going to make the change --- also returning to the site on Monday.
The shape of the buds, mostly, (and the flowers just a little) reminded me of Flame Vine, Pyrostegia venusta. I think this might be a member of the same Family, one level up. If you'll enter "Bignoniaceae purple" into Google, there appear to be some relatives, at least, of your flower ... which is very beautiful.

I think you've got it, Rosalie!
It might be the Large Beardtongue; both the leaves and flowers appear to match. Beautiful flower!

It's such a distinctive flower, but I couldn't find it in minnesotawildflowers.com or a number of wildflower reference books.
Does anyone think it is related to Fox glove?
