Cinquefoil

Potentilla sp.

Description:

A buttery yellow Cinquefoil flower with a hoverfly resting on it. Leaf edges are spiky. The plant was about 4-5 inches tall.

Habitat:

Temperate forest.

Notes:

Need help with the species ID. It looks like sulfur cinquefoil to me.

ForestDragon, I added a second photo that shows a different angle. Actually, the leaves are visible in both photos. In the first photo, the leaves are on the left side. Sorry that I couldn't take any close ups. I also updated the description.

I think you are correct as far as I can see. It looks like Potentilla recta, Sulpher Cinquefoil. Did you happen to get any photos of the leaves and stem? Those can be very helpful when trying to ID plants since some species are very similar looking.
