Spotted in a back yard. This individual was alive, but quite lethargic, did not fly off, just refolded its wings, when nudged to check for signs of life.

Thanks for that link Jeff. It provides a lot of quality info, but unfortunately it is not possible, using visual clues alone, to definitively identify this spotting. The closest possibilities seem to be Bombus caliginosus, B. vandykei and B. vosnesenskii.
There are a few bumblebees in the Pacific Northwest with yellow faces. The USFS guide is pretty good: http://www.xerces.org/wp-content/uploads...
