Small red beetle with black spots
Shore of Lake Huron
Hi Maggie! It's hard to count the spots, one of the markings to ID this beauty. If it has 9, then CONGRATULATIONS! They have 4 spots on each elytra (the side wings) and one split in the middle to make 9. My pronotum (the head) is black with white marks on front. So, I am Coccinella novemnotata, the nine- spotted ladybug an the insect of the New York State. Very difficult to find since its numbers have been dwindling since around 1990.
