Owlfly

Haplogenius appendiculatus

Description:

Owlflies are dragonfly-like insects with large bulging eyes and long knobbed antennae. They are neuropterans in the family Ascalaphidae; they are only distantly related to the true flies, and even more distant from the dragonflies and damselflies. Contrary to the name, they are not true flies (Order Diptera), but belong to an order of carnivorous insects that have four net-veined wings and mouthparts adapted for chewing. Owlflies are closely related to lacewings and ant lions (note the similarities in wing structure on adults).

have you tried the porch light? Leave it on and then check at about 3 in the morning. You might see a few insects and moths.
