Fiery Searcher

Calosoma scrutator

Description:

Abdomen is covered by metallic-green wings with distinct vertical ridges. Rainbow-like head/thorax area. Very active. Length: probably 1.5 inches (not counting antennae).

Habitat:

"Open woods, fields, and gardens... often under rocks, logs, leaves, bark, or decomposing wood... active from May to November." -- fcps.edu

Notes:

Surprisingly strong. It was shuffling around stacks of paper as it scurried around the office. Discovered in a shoe on the third floor of a bank/office building. May bring him home to let him feast on the caterpillar surplus in my garden...
