Eastern Spadefoot Toad

Scaphiopus holbrookii

Description:

After a huge amount of rain overnight, I came home from work the morning of 5/16 and heard a sound coming from the area around a pond in my backyard that wasn't the usual toad/frog sound that I was used to hearing. I went to investigate and discovered Eastern Spadefoot Toads in my yard! There were some in the pond, and some outside of the pond where water was overflowing and creating runoff. I'd never seen, or even heard of, them before. What an exciting find!

Habitat:

In/around the pond in my backyard between Middleway and Summit Point, WV, in Jefferson County
