Wheel Bug

Arilus cristatus

Description:

A large wheel bug. Really large. About 1 1/2 inch body, which is about as big as they can get. Very patient with photographer.

Habitat:

Suburban garden.

Notes:

This fellow has been lurking at the base of my giant hosta leaves for several days, waiting for his insect prey. Apparently these can inflict a painful bite on humans, but this one was very tolerant.
