Little Skate

Leucoraja erinacea

Description:

Small skate found deceased on the beach. Flat body with rounded fins. Pale underside. Brown with round dark spots on upper side. Small spines on tail and partially along the middle of the back.

Habitat:

Montauk Point, New York. Rocky seashore.

Notes:

There were a few of these skates of varying sizes that had washed up on the beach. I suspect that they might have been bycatch from a fishing vessel but I am not sure. Sad if that is the case.

Poor one..But I must admit it has a very pretty face!
I used to scuba dive in Rockport, MA. There you could sort of pick them carefully and then they made a ball to protect themselves (I was always very careful with them). Cool animals!
