I think you're right. This is not a bumblebee, but a carpenter bee. The first thing I noticed was the hairless abdomen. Bumblebees will have a hairy abdomen while this species of carpenter bee has a hairless abdomen. I suspect what you have here is the Eastern Carpenter Bee (Xylocopa virginica).
