Eastern cicada killer

Sphecius speciosus

Description:

This sighting: large (2-3 inches!) wasp-like insects buzzing around the trunk of an oak tree and feeding on sap. It's not often I see something in my neighborhood that I've never heard of before.

Habitat:

Suburban woodland

I'll try to get a photo if I see them again. I have to admit they intimidated me! Perhaps also some better images with my dSLR and macro lens too.

You mentioned a "swarm" of these guys. No photo? :-(
