magnolia, philippines

Description:

On of the magnolias that thrive in tropical climates. The tree or shrub grows like a cypress, straight narrow canopy, around 3 meters tall. It is quite common in urban gardens around Metro-Manila.

Habitat:

Metro-Manila

Notes:

The original plant was given to my father by Mrs. Purita Ponce-Enrile, a well known horticulturist, and a neighbor. Our place, Malabon is low and floods have devastated it. We moved to a higher area, Quezon city. I marcotted this plant 2 years before we planned to move. We moved in 1990. It is genetically identical to the original plant. I have planted a lot of plants from our original home to my present garden. I am continuously marcotting, planting from seeds and cuttings, to give away to neighbors and friends.

Thanks to Kris F for identifying it as "banana bush." I don't think this is correct. The banana bush or shrub has a flower 1/5 the size and is much more fragrant than the one I posted.
Fascinating to identify plants which have been around me for so long.

If the flower was very small and smelled very sweet try looking up banana bush.
