Carolina Locust

Dissostera carolina

Description:

1 1/2 - 2 inches. A large grasshopper with a short antennae. Tan or grayish, sometimes with a rusty tinge. Hind wings black with broad yellow margins. Conspicuous in flight looking more like a white and black butterfly.

Habitat:

Roadsides, dry fields, vacant lots and dunes. Throughout North America.

Notes:

In Vermont this year 2013 we have had more grasshoppers than ever seen in the past. Love them.
