Blue crab

Callinectes sapidus

Description:

Blue hued multijointed marine invertebrate, oblong shaped with the left & right sides of it's shell ending at a sharp point. Also characterized by having the carapace fused to all thoratic segments, and by the possession of stalked eyes.

Habitat:

Mainly along beaches, rocky shorelines, & tidal areas, but can be found as deep as 120 feet in some locations.

Notes:

"Callinectes" Greek word for beautiful swimmer (Calli = beautiful, Nectes = swimmer). "Sapidus" Latin word for savory
