Compare the two - there is an obvious difference in the striping.

If you still think it is Mt Hermon's, I'd contact Dept of Fish and Wildlife asap

Welcome to Project Noah, Molly Summers

I hope you like the site as much we do; there are many features you can explore:
I invite you to go to http://www.projectnoah.org/faq where you will find the purpose and “rules” of Project Noah.
There is a blog http://blog.projectnoah.org/ where we post articles from spotters with special insight into different organisms.
There are also the chats for help with identification, and to comment on your own and others’ spottings.
Look at the global and local missions to put your spottings into: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions

I live in Mount Hermon and am familiar with the size and characteristics of this beetle. They want to build a BMX/dirt bike trail with jumps on the land.

The images on Bugguide.net suggest ten-lined june beetle (the white lines appear more irregular on the Mt. Hermon). Anyone trying to develop on suitable sandy soils in that part of Santa Cruz County will be dealing with the USFWS before they can get a permit from the city or county.

Just curious, since it is supposed to be a vanishing species. It would be cool if the is indeed correct. Just curious how you know for sure?

in a bottle, I caught it on the property next to my house that they want to build on!

If this is Mt Hermon June beetle the scientific name is Polyphylla barbata, otherwise 10 line June beetle is P. decemlineata. Was this in a display?
