Eastern Garter Snake

Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis

Description:

Dark green snake with three yellow bands, and sparse white speckling. Individuals can vary greatly.

Habitat:

The Common Garter Snake has a huge range spanning across most of North America. These snakes prefer woodland habitat, but in some populations wetland areas are more commonly used by Garter Snakes for habitat.

Notes:

This snake was spotted sunning itself on the pavement near the park office. This is an excellent example of why great care should be taken when driving through the campground.
