Slender Green Orb weaver

Araneus talipedatus

Description:

A living contrast between camouflage and warning colours? This small spider (about 12mm long) was mostly the same dull green as the eucalyptus leaf it was on. But it had a dazzlingly bright dorsal line on it's abdomen of red yellow which seemed to glow by comparison.

Habitat:

On leaves of Eucalyptus microcarpa at a local sports field boundary.

Notes:

Quite variable... some have no line on the abdomen at all. Distribution map http://bie.ala.org.au/species/Araneus+ta...

Nice shot Mark. They are usually not so bright as yours. I took ages to find the ID for mine, then got confused by Wiki which has an incorrect name for this spider, I think. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyrtophora
