My first encounter with these caterpillars was in Xilitla, Mexico, where they were happily feeding on Urera – ortiga brava, Spanish for "bad nettle" – a most painful and evil-looking large shrub (purple flowers, blackish juice, and covered with stinging spines and hairs) that locals use as a low-tech but equally effective "electric" fence. Here's a photo of the dark larval morph from Bolivia . . .

Looks like a Nymphalidae, (Biblidini??), but I am not sure. I will keep an eye on this one...
