Araneus diadema
orb weaver, large orange and brown/white tesselated abdomen
open sunny goldenrod field mid-day, dangling from the very top of an aster flowering plant, i was sitting right next to this spider and it had folded up its legs and was completely invisible to me until I was very still for a while and it unfurled its legs and started weaving a web inches from my face, wow
SIMILAR TO: European Garden spider Araneus diadema
Also called the Cross Orbweaver (same species just a different common name). I agree with Mauna's ID suggestion!
