Himalayan Marmot

Marmota spp. (Marmota himalayana??)

Description:

Cuddly, golden browny large rat-like mammals. These live in colonies and can be seen sprawled on boulders sunbathing or even standing on two feet and scouting ahead.

Habitat:

Stony cold desert region of Ladakh. The ice in the background provides clues to the ambient temperature when the shot was taken. Practically no green anywhere.

Notes:

I have many other shots of these marmots...all taken from a moving car. Sound of traffic does not seem to bother them much.
