Donkey

Equus africanus asinus

Description:

Shaggy coats, dark brown and one individual was almost black. Pointy-ears. Very short mane.

Habitat:

There were many kept corralled in a plot of land adjoining a house on the outskirts of Leh town in the Himalayan region of ladakh. The donkeys were having a sociable time, kicking and butting each other. These three that were photographed were huddled together and the solitary one was braying away all by itself.

Notes:

Reportedly, two major types of donkeys are seen in India differentiated on the basis of size. The larger size donkeys are light grey to almost white in colour. The smaller size ones are dark grey in colour. These look like the smaller, darker kind. We were told the donkeys were to be sent elsewhere and this was a holding area. Domesticated.
