It is also very common in Tasmania. They have even gone feral and pop-up all along the road sides.

Indeed, you are right in everything you say. This plant is very common in dry areas of Spain.

We have one of these just below our house. It's about 3 meters tall and I keep expecting it to flower and die. There are at least a dozen little sucker plants around the base, so we'd probably start over with the largest.
