About an 25 mm long. Hairy body with black and rusty-orange colored stripes. Wings are black.
Open grassy area with many wild flower and other large wasp species.

Male velvet ant (family Mutillidae)

The males don't have stingers so they can't sting you - but from personal experience some of them can give you quite a bite.
