That caterpillar is orgyia leucostigma commonly called the white marked tussock moth. They are often found feeding on the leaves of apple, cherry oak Rose Spruce Willow Hickory hemlock And Birch. They have recently suffered a decline in New England states due to the introduction of the non-native fungus E. maimaiga as a gypsy moth L. dispar control measure.
