Dragonfly

Neurothemis terminata

Description:

Libellulidae; Neurothemis terminata (Ris, 1911). Wikipedia's article, on Neurothemis terminata, basically gives distribution information and a description (paraphrased) as follows: "The male N. terminata's body and wings are mainly red. Those of the female are mostly yellowish. The adult has a body length of 8-11 cm". It is simple, short and gives all the information that I need. There is also a picture of a male and a picture of a female. Good job, well done Wiki. Then the article on the Genus, in - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neurothemi... - is just about the best I have seen, from the point of view of a "spotter". It lists all of the species in the Neurothemis Genus, with details of distribution and common names (some species do not have common names, including N. terminata). Then they add, wherever possible, pictures of male and female specimens. I found myself wishing that all websites were as straight forward as this. Thanks again. Wiki.

Habitat:

The dragonfly shown here was flying around and landing here and there (in typical dragonfly style) in our backyard this morning. I think it was enjoying a temporary respite from the heavy rain we have had in recent days.

Notes:

When I was selecting which photos to show in my spotting, I almost left out the third one (side view). It just didn't seem to look very good, but it was the only side view I managed to photograph this morning. Then, when I was checking everything before clicking on the "Publish Spotting" button, I noticed that Wiki's photo of a female looked pretty much exactly like mine. So. I decided to leave it in.
