The seed pods are orange when ripe, and can weigh up to a pound. The flowers and fruit develop directly from the trunk and older branches, giving the tree a slightly different look. The flowers are pink.

Chocolate and cocoa powder come from this tree, making it an economically important plant. The flowers are pollinated by flies.
